Spain Project of steel structure warehouse

2025-11-12
Project name: Spain steel structure warehouse

Construction time: 2024.3.1~2024.5.20

The warehouse adopts the form of steel structure frame plus color steel veneer external maintenance.

It is 53.36 meters long (seven bays of steel frame in total), with a span of 23.36 meters, an eave height of 8.1 meters, a slope of 10%, and is made of Q355B.

The main structure weighs 35.4 tons, purlin attachment weighs 23.1 tons, roof 1674m2, wall 1181m2, door 62m2 (including 4.5*4.2 roller shutter door in 3 places, 1.2*2.3 swing door in 2 places).

Technical challenges 1

The warehouse spans reach 23.36 metres across seven continuous bays (total length 53.36 metres). Although the Q355B steel meets strength requirements, the lateral stiffness of the steel frame is insufficient for such large spans. This renders it susceptible to deflection under wind and roof loads, while the coordinated loading across multiple bays may lead to stress concentration at joints.

Solutions:
  1. Structural optimisation design: Install lateral bracing systems between steel columns (utilising cross-braced struts), maintain purlin spacing at 1.5 metres (to accommodate roof load transfer), and incorporate horizontal rigid tie rods at the ridge to enhance overall lateral stiffness.
  2. Node reinforcement treatment: Beam-column joints are designed as rigid connections, with weld grades upgraded to Class II. Node plates are configured at 16mm thickness to mitigate cracking risks arising from stress concentration.
Technical challenges 2

Roof area: 1,674 square metres; wall area: 1,181 square metres. The building envelope is extensive, and the roof pitch is only 10% (prone to water accumulation).

Solutions:
  1. Material selection and adaptation: The roof employs 0.6mm thick high-wave colour-coated steel sheets (wave height ≥30mm).
  2. Waterproofing construction at junctions: Install flashing plates (thickness ≥ 1.0mm) at ridge, eaves and wall corners. Ensure overlapping length between flashing plates and colour-coated steel sheets ≥ 150mm. Apply weather-resistant silicone sealant (temperature tolerance -40°C to 80°C) with full-coverage sealing.
  3. Construction Process Control: Prior to roof sheet installation, verify the flatness of the base purlins (permissible deviation ≤2mm/m). Install colour-coated steel sheets in the direction of water flow to prevent reverse overlapping.

Through the concerted efforts of the entire company, this project has been brought to a successful conclusion, garnering unanimous praise from the contractors.
